Skiing Deer Valley - Part One

Two words to start out this first of three posts on our trip out to Park City, Utah.

FIRST CLASS!

As you may recall, a month ago our friends invited us to join them at the St. Regis in Deer Valley for an extended weekend.

Well, it was all I dreamed of and more.

Because I took so many pictures it's going to take me 3 posts to get through.

Today we will begin with our first day of skiing.

Our friends arrived later in the day from San Francisco so we didn't meet up with them until the early evening.

First off, we rented a car instead of doing a car service.

We weighed it out and it was the same price and we knew we wanted to stop by a liquor and grocery store on our way in knowing how weird the alcohol laws are in Utah.

When arriving at the St. Regis we realized that you can't actually drive up to the resort because it's nestled in a private, exclusive neighborhood called Deer Crest.

Instead you pull up the reception center near the main lodge of the Deer Valley Ski Resort.

From there they take your car and bags and you ride the funicular(gondala type lift)up to the the resort.

When arriving at the resort everything is amazing.

The fireplaces, decor, service.

Since it was still early we didn't check into our room until after our day of skiing.

Instead we headed down to the lower-lobby where there is a ski shop and ski valets.

We got on our boots and hit the mountain.

A few things to note about hitting the mountain from the St. Regis.

The ski valets literally do everything for you.

After renting our equipment, and each morning, a ski valet comes out, helps you put your boots on and then puts your skis on the snow for you.

From there it's all downhill.

Seriously.

As you can see in this picture we skiied straight out of the door and down a run that takes you to lift.

Then, when you're done for the day you ski right back down another run/hill and right up to the ski valet where they again, take your skis and help you off with your boots.

Not sure how we'll ski again without staying here!

SPOILED!

The actual ski resort is just as nice.

On both days we never had to wait in a lift line.

We were amazed.

The snow?

Awesome.

Brad is known to complain here and there but on this vacation?

Not at all.

Awesome again.

The views were breathtaking.

Another cool fact about Deer Valley is that they don't allow snow boarders.

So, that also makes a big difference when it comes to the overall experience.

There are two sides of the resort.

This first day we skiied the side of the mountain near the St. Regis which is surrounded by million dollar homes.

You are skiing right through a million dollar enclave of homes that includes Ski Magazine's Dream Home.

Unlike anywhere I've ever skiied.

The whole resort was first class all the way.

Every restaurant and lodge on the mountain was awesome as well.

The food, the service, the facilities.

No, yucky bathrooms anywhere on this mountain.

All of them are heated, clean with real hand towels and decked out with granite and marble.

And, the place wasn't over run with kids either.

I know that sounds terrible but there's somethng about enjoying a nice lunch without 15 to20 kids running about around you.

Brad and I thought we had died and gone to ski heaven this first day.

And, it was only the beginning.

Due to my huge number of photos you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see our luxury suite we stayed that included butler service, two fireplaces, two decks and much more.

We were told that Papa John of the Pizza Chain owns the top floor of this St. Regis.

Thoughts and Random Pics Thursday

This week has been busy, to say the least.

Not the best at times either.

Sobering news as I found out that a friend and co-worker on our team has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 3rd woman on our team to have such a diagnosis in the past couple of years.

I'm so tired of all this cancer mess!

Why can't someone find a cure???!!

Please keep her and her family in your prayers.

On to better news..

My week started out with a half of the King Cake from our Super Bowl party left over.

I brought it to work and it was devoured in a couple of short hours.

The person who got the baby charm in the cake thought it meant she was going to have a baby and freaked out.

I assured her that it only means she has to throw the next party or bring the next cake.

Moving on to Monday night when I got together with other fellow Charlotte bloggers.

I had met them all before so it was nice to catch up again.

A little wine on a Monday is never a bad thing.

On Tuesday, I picked up this gaudy little vest that I have packed to wear on our ski vacation -- which we leave for today!!
WOOT!

On Tuesday and Wednesday, I got out of the office and went into the field for a production.
Always fun!

Interviewing people and learning new things.

(No, I don't use the camera - I work with a photographer)

I haven't cooked once this week except for making kale chips last night.
Instead we've snacked around and went out to eat once at Charlotte's British Pub, Big Ben.

The first time we've been there since it moved to its new location.

Brad enjoyed the fish n' chips.

And, I was semi-good ordering a salad.

Yes, those are a lot of won tons on there but I assure you I took a majority of them off because otherwise it would have just been a big bowl of won tons!

Like, I mentioned, we leave today for our Park City vacation.

We are super excited!

We're going to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary and Valentine's Day while we're there!

Believe it or not, it's almost 3-years ago to the day that Brad and I went on our first trip ever together to Lake Tahoe to ski.

I immediately put into a scrapbook.

I'm sentimental like that!

Fleur De Lis Cookies

First off..

I feel like I'm about to eat my words with my Mom.

She was so crafty and domestic when I was growing up and was always trying to teach me things.

I had no interest whatsoever.

She was cake decorator extraordinaire among other things.

Now......

I'm getting into it.

Not cakes.. but cookies.

Or, at least I think?

Before I start..

Giving that...
My Mom bought me this cookie cutter for Christmas.

She figured, aside from cookies I could use it to cut finger sandwiches for parties.

After deciding we were going to have a Mardi Gras themed Super Bowl party I just knew I had to use the cutter to make cookies!!

As I mentioned yesterday, my neighbor is a quite the baker!

So, she agreed to help me make sure these cut out cookies were perfect!

(Just so you know, I'm good a drop cookies not cutouts~)

Friday night she came over and helped me

She advised me that when working with sugar cookie dough you have to keep it chilled.
So, I only made a few cookies at a time and put the dough back into the freezer.

Then, after cutting them out I put them into the fridge for a short time because she told me if not they might 'swell'.

So, here's what I came out with.

We left our task of making the icing and decorating to Saturday night.
I was going to try and do it alone but after looking at LeAnne's recipe I got intimidated and made her come over and guide me through.

Our other neighbor, Shannan, helped as well.

I decided on green and yellow icing.
I wanted purple but didn't feel like running to the store once again so I used what I had in the house.

The icing is a mixture of meringue powder, sifted powered sugar and water.
Which, just so you know, meringue powder is a bitch to find in stores.

You pretty much have to buy it in a store with a Wilton section.

The first step is making a border on your cookies using an icing bag and fine tip.

LeAnne assures me that it takes practice to get this down to a pretty fine line.
Mine is pretty shaky.

The second step is to add a few teaspoons of water to the icing to fill in the border and smooth on the cookie.
Not too bad but I wasn't overly pleased.

That's when I remembered that I had some green sparkles leftover from Christmas cookies that we added.

Not too bad for my first time at this!
I was so proud!

The yellow didn't turn out as good but, again, my first time!

I let them dry overnight and then the next morning put them in treat bags and wrapped up with a bow for party favors!

Aside from the cookies I made, LeAnne made football cake pops to be used as party favors for our Super Bowl party too!

So, there you have it!

My first attempt at 'real' cookie making.

I'm already planning on the next ones I'm going to make and give as gifts.

Shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day then crosses for Easter!

Maybe this is my new 'thing?'

We will see!

Sure is time consuming but it's so fulfilling to see your cookies in the end!

Mardi Gras Themed Super Bowl Party

Super Bowl Sunday is a whole lot more fun when your team is playing.

This year, of course, none of my favorites were(Panthers/Saints).

Despite that fact, we had a Super Bowl Party!

Giving we weren't into either of the teams I decided we would make it a Mardi Gras themed Super Bowl Bash!

Beer, Beads and Super Bowl!

Of course, I did a tablescape!

As I mentioned last week, my co-worker brought me a whole boat load of beads and several feather masks.

From there I took the ribbon I bought for 70% off and used linens I already had and went to town!

I made a sign for the table too using Paperless Post that my blogger b/f/f, I Do Declare, introduced me to during the holidays.

The food was amazing as to be expected.

Along, with our neighbors LeAne and Keith, we made some food and then had some of our guests bring items too.

Our friends Katie and Josh made homemade Cajun turkey meatballs.

These were delish!

We had drinks!
Since it was a work night we didn't do hurricanes after all.

Just wine and beer.

I used one of my decorative wine bottles in the bar area.

Back to the food.

LeAne made fried macaroni and cheese!

Another friend brought chicken buffalo dip.

Baked potato dip with waffle fries!

Brad smoked wings..

And, LeAne's husband Keith made ribs!

There was a ton of yummy food!

No party is complete without a few favors for the guests.

I made Fleur de lis cookies and LeAne made football shaped cake pops.

We'll both be posting about these tomorrow.

More, LeAne, who's a bakerella, with a tutorial on how to make these cute pops!

I had tons of Abita Purple Haze on hand for the party.
If you've never tried one, you should run to your nearest store and get some right away!

Aside from the Abita beer from Louisiana, I also had a King Cake shipped in from Haydel's Bakery in New Orleans.
A majority of our guests had never had one before.

Delicious as well!
I brought the half left over to work.

A good time for sure!

Everyone stayed way past the halftime show!

Thanks to my new b/f/f neighbor LeAne for all of her help!
We had a lot of fun baking and decorating together and are looking forward to our next event!

I'm sure it won't be as much fun as the Mardi Gras theme but we can try!

Brad and LeAne's husband Keith had a blast as well, smoking up the meat all weekend.
At times, maybe even a little too much fun!

A Trip to the Circus!

I only remember going to the Circus once as a child.

My Mom swears we went more than that but I honestly don't remember it.

Last year when The Ringling Brothers came to town I wanted to take our nephew Reed but decided he was still too young.

This year he's 5 1/2-years old!

Perfect age!

Brad was home getting things ready for our Super Bowl party today so it was just Reed and I.

Yesterday day was a yucky, rainy day in Charlotte.

But...

We made our way to the Time Warner Cable Arena for the early show.

Once inside the treats and sweets were everywhere!

I asked last week about giving Reed $20 to spend.

Well, his parents decided to chip in some extra so he didn't have to choose between a toy and a treat.

The decision was made after we found out that a bag of cotton candy was being sold for $13.

Lemonade in a souvenir cup?

$15.00

Snow cones in a souvenir cup - $15.00 as well.

I was sure Reed was going to pick a necklace that light up but he went for a light-up sword instead($20) and a bag of cotton candy that came with a hat.

Munchkin was/is obsessed with the sword.

The woman sitting next to us wasn't as thrilled with it, giving that Reeders was waving it in her face.

HA!

He was so pumped about being at the Circus!

The show opened with the National Anthem.

And, was complete with clowns, dancers, animals, a ringmaster, pyrotechnics, a full band/orchestra and much more!

I read the reviews online before going yesterday and they made a good point.

Giving the success of the Cirque shows, The Ringling Brothers have really had to step up their game.

There were tons of acrobats and trapeze acts as well.

My SIL didn't think Reed would choose the cotton candy, but he did.

It's the way they presented.

High on a stick and pretty to look at.

Reed was so sweet in telling me that he was going to save half the bag for his sister because that's what good brothers do.

It was rainy yesterday so pardon my bad hair.

After an hour there was a 15-minute intermission then the 2nd half is where they did all the acts with the animals.

First was the tigers.

Amazing!

I'm not sure I would be up for being in this ring!

Then, the elephants!

So cool!

I know, PETA thinks different.

They did greet us with signs on our way in and out of the Arena.

Overall, a great show for $20 a ticket!

My only complaint?

About 15-minutes too long.

The show started at 11am and we didn't get out of there till nearly 1:30pm.

Reed was getting tired towards the end asking me, 'are we done yet?'.

We had to see the grand finale!

Plus, we were going to have to climb over 2 families to get out of our seats.

I'm glad we stayed to the very end!

He loved the finale as they rocketed a performer on fire across the Arena!

On our way to the car, Reed asked if we could go back next year.

I'm thinking so!

So.. Reed's first Circus experience is complete and I am so thrilled that my BIL and SIL let me be the one to take him!

Decorative Wine Bottles

It's no secret that I'm into wine.

When people ask what is your drink of choice? I'm not one that says -- Grey Goose dirty martini.

I'm boring.

I say chardonnay.

HA!

So, giving that we drink lots of wine means we have a lot of wine bottles hanging around the house.

What to do with them?

Decorate them!

(warning..sideways pictures. It's IPhone thing. Has anyone else experienced this? it bugs the crap out of me!)

All you need is a roll of masking tape.

Tear the tape into little pieces and cover the entire bottle.

Then paint whatever color you want them to be with a sponge brush and acrylic paint!

I know, this yellow isn't for everyone but I wanted it for Mardi Gras.

Don't think I came up with this on my own.

My Mother is pretty crafty, even though she's not into 'crafts' any more these days.

Many years ago she made this for me.

She talked a wine shop into giving her the box then she painted wine bottles to put in.

I've snatched a few of them and used around the house.

Good way to fill space up high on an amoire.

But, for this weekend I'm using the wine bottles as decoration for our kitchen table.

I can't wait for you guys to see all the decorations for our Super Bowl party on Sunday!

I'm pretty impressed with myself because I'm so not crafty.

But, again.. you'll have to wait until Monday to see.

For now you get to see these cheesy bottles.

Don't you love the votive holders?

My MIL bought one for me last year and I picked up another one at Childress Winery last weekend.

So, if you're bored and want something to do.

Wrap a wine bottle with tape!

Random Stuff Thursday

A whole lot of random here on the blog today.

Last weekend when we went to visit my in-laws we stopped by a store that had all of their Christmas decor 70% off.

I almost didn't want to go because I knew it would be too tempting.

Well, I caved and walked out with $40 worth of stuff that would have been nearly $200.

SCORE!

One of the things I bought for $10 was this purple and gold wreath.

I'm sure they were selling it for ECU fans but I immediately thought two things.

Football season it could be decorated for LSU!

Second, Mardi Gras!!

Instead of having my niece send me Mardi Gras beads and such, I remembered that my co-worker's wife is from NOLA.

He told me that had a garage full of stuff that I could have!

SCORE again!

Last night I got creative and came up with this!

Gaudy?

Yes, but that's what Mardi Gras is all about!

I took the masks off some beads that were in the bag.

To go with our wreath I put out a garden flag that my MIL gave me over the weekend.

So, we are keeping it festive in the hood!

I'm sure my neighbors think I'm a loon.

Out of the entire bag of beads these are my two favorite.

Love me some Abita and the Katrina beads brought back memories.

While I was decorating my wreath Brad was getting his creative on by decorating wine bottles.

Venturing Back into the Pageant World

It's True.

Back in the day I was a 'pageant' girl.

No worries it was no Toddlers and Tiaras type of thing.

I actually started them when I was 12 or 13-years old after begging my parents.

I gave them up at age 17 and decided to gain my freshman 15 or 20 in college instead.

But, it's true.

I was obsessed.

Believe it or not, I even represented the great state of Arkansas at the Miss Teen of America pageant back in 1991.

That's how I met my bestie Beth who we are going skiing with in Park City next week.

She was Miss Teen of Washington.

Crazy or what?

Life long friends for sure.

I was only 15-years old.

The youngest contestant in the whole pageant.

I tap danced for my talent.

It was a scholarship type of pageant.

And, no.. I didn't win.

I didn't even make the Top 10.

After I retired from competing I was still VERY involved in the pageant world both in Arkansas and Louisiana while I was in college.

In fact, my job freshman year was working for the director of Little Miss Louisiana who also ran several other pageants.

And, my parents became pageant directors for Miss Teen and Pre-Teen of Colorado and I helped them out a lot too.

I have done everything from stuff envelopes, to organize applications to judge pageants.

Which leads me into today's post.

No!

I'm not entering a Mrs. pageant!!!

I'm sure that's what a lot of you were going.

HA!

I would need to shed a few pounds and start P90-X in a big way!

But..

I have been asked to judge a preliminary to Miss North Carolina which then takes the winner to Miss America!

It has been over a decade since I have come up with intelligent interview questions and decided on whether or not a girl's dress fits their body, or whether their talent is perfected.

But.. in 2-weeks I'll be joining this world again!

The pageant world!!

Who knows what type of opportunities I'll be getting myself into from here!

Mardi Gras/Super Bowl Madness

I need to seriously calm down!

Along with our neighbors we have decided to have a 'few people over' for the Super Bowl and I now have this hair-brain idea we're making it a Mardi Gras party too!

I just can't help myself!

My Mother In-Law and I hit a store over the weekend where all of their Christmas decor was 70% off and I found items that can be used for a Mardi Gras table scape!

Now, I'm getting on Pinterest (follow me here)and going nuts!

RIDICULOUS!
We're doing everything at our house but my neighbor LeAne is helping with the decor too.

We're inviting people outside the hood as well and told the neighbors to do the same!

I still have a few things Mardi Gras but having moved so many times over the years I've thrown out all my beads and such.

So, I talked to my niece Hannah the other night and she's sending me some of hers to decorate with.

Of course, I have ideas in my mind with items I already have at the house because I'm determined to spend little or no $$.

Burgers and More - I've been Tagged

It's been a while since I've done one of these but my blogger buddy, MCW, tagged me with 11 questions so here it goes.

#1. How do you eat your burger?

I love homemade hamburgers and the more ketchup,mustard and pickles the better. I always cut my burger in half too to make it easier to eat.

#2. What's your favorite characteristic about yourself?

The ability to make conversation with anyone from any walk of life.

It doesn't matter what race, gender, class or what part of the country/World you are from.

Or, if I've never met them before!

#3. What time period from the past would you like to live in?

I'm obsessed with the Old South so I'm going to say the Civil War Era.

Of course, only if I was the daughter of a plantation owner like Miss Scarlett!

LOL!

Seriously, how fun would it have been to live in a plantation home and wear beautiful dresses?

#4. What actress would be cast to play you?

Lord, I don't know but I would like to say Ashley Judd.

Love her.

If only, I had her body.

#5. What was your first car?

Gosh, I wish I had a picture to show y'all.

It was a 1987 Grey/Silver Dodge Charger.

I received it for Christmas in 1991.

It had no air-conditioning and I wrecked it 6-months later when I pulled out in front of someone.

My Dad was NOT.HAPPY.AT.ALL

#6. What's one product I hope it never discontinued?

Tyler Candles.

I could not live without them. It's pretty ridiculous.

I actually found several Christmas scents on sale this weekend for 70% off and stocked up for next year.

If you haven't tried them, do so!

#7. What was high school like for you?

High school weren't my best years.
We moved my 10th grade year from Baton Rouge to Hot Springs, AR.
While I made new friends and was in the 'cool' crowd, I never really clicked with the Hot Springs crowd.
Maybe it was because I left behind my boyfriend in Louisiana?

All I could think about was getting back to Baton Rouge.

The minute I graduated I was on the road and ready for LSU where I spent the next 6-years of my life.

(4 1/2 in college and 1 1/2 years working after school at a local TV station)

Oh, and BTW, still friends with my first boyfriend seen above.

He's married with 2-kids and still in Baton Rouge.

#8. Do you believe in ghosts?

Totally!

I could do an entire post on this but my simple answer is YES!

#9. What would your dream house look like?

In the mountains on a lake with a ginormous outdoor kitchen and living space.

Enough bedrooms and bathrooms for plenty of family and friends to visit.

#10. When did you have your first beer? Did you have more than one?

I've never been a beer drinker so I'm not real sure.

I was a wine cooler kind of gal back in the day.

Cheesy but true.

So, I'm going to say probably at some fraternity party.

#11. What is your least favorite word?

Robust.

It is overused in the corporate world and I think people think it makes them look smarter.

I think I'm suppose to tag people but I say take the questions and go for it if you want!

Winery Visit, Boat Ride -Fun Family Weekend

Christmas was the last time we saw any of Brad's side of the family, including our niece and nephew, so this weekend we made plans to do just that.

It started out Friday night with us going out to BIL and SIL's house for dinner.

We brought the munchkins Valentine's Day cookies.

After dinner I enjoyed a few snuggles with Paige and Buddy.

Getting a little bit goofy!

Ice cream sandwiches that Buddy wanted a bite of badly.

Then on Saturday we woke and after a few errands we headed North to the Salisbury/Lexington area where Brad's parents live.

Since the weather was so nice we decided on lunch at nearby Childress Winery.

If you live in NC and have never been you should plan a visit.

Super nice.
We go several times every year since it's so close to the lake house.

Cheese board.

What's new.

Our view was the vineyard which isn't the prettiest in Winter.

Couldn't find the back light setting on my camera.
You get the idea.

I picked up a few bottles to have for our upcoming Super Bowl party.
Stay tuned for that!

After lunch our next stop was a nature preserve that my FIL was eager for us to see.

I wish I had that kind of money to spend.

The weather was in the mid-sixties so when we got back to the house we decided to go for a little pontoon ride.

Not too bad but we didn't stay out too long because the sun started going down and it cooled off quick!

Which resulted in us building a fire to warm up.

Perfect end to a perfect fun-filled weekend with family.

Now we're enjoying our Sunday.

I'm having a dinner tonight with a friend I haven't seen in a couple of years.

Movie Soundtracks - My Favorite

Last night I called my niece to chat and she told me that the movie GREASE One was on CMT.

I immediately switched the channel!

GREASE One was my all-time favorite movie growing up.

So much that I watched it at least 2x's a week and I had the 8-track, tape and record.

I use to play it over and over and over again.

I would dance and sing all over our house.

It would DRIVE MY BROTHER CRAZY!

He would comment, 'Oh, great..not that album again.'

and...

'Stop dancing!'

HA!

My cousins and I use to act out scenes from the movie all the time too putting on our poodle skirts and singing and dancing.

So, last night while watching I sent my brother a couple of pictures and wrote.

"Hey! My favorite childhood movie is on! OHH Sandy!"

Gotta love it.

Brad, of course, has never seen the movie in its entirety.

I, of course, know every song which got us on the topic of movie soundtracks.

He figured GREASE was probably one of the top grossing ones of all time.

It's totally my all-time favorite but I remembered reading recently that The Bodyguard soundtrack was actually the top selling ever.

And, sure enough it is.

Miranda Lambert Concert!

I'm not big on going out during the week but I make exceptions here and there.

Last night was one of them when my friend Katie invited me to join her and one of her co-workers, and her family, for the Miranda Lambert concert.

With the ticket only costing $20, I said yes!

I was excited to wear my cowboy boots I got for Christmas and I paired it with a red cowboy hat I bought 8-years ago and have only worn once.

I thought at first it might be too much red but then I decided that I didn't care if it was.

We went early and tailgated in the parking lot like good rednecks do.

I sent the above picture to my friend Kathleen and she said "you look skinny!"

Little did she know I had my Spanx on under my jeans.

HA!

You know I don't do any sort of tailgate without wine and cheese.

Last night gave me the chance to use my new picnic-ware that my Mom gave me for Christmas.

I'm loving the new plates that allow you to hook in your plastic wine glass!

It will be great for Pops in the Park this summer.

I picked up the basket years ago while wine tasting in the Central Coast of California.

A little cheesy?

Yes, but that's how Dee rolls.

When inside the venue Katie had to buy a koozie.

She said she picks one up from every concert she goes too.

HA!

She bought me one too.

So sweet!

Chris Young opened up.

Pretty good stuff!

Then Miranda took stage!

I heart her.

She was suppose to play here last week but had to reschedule after her FIL, Blake's dad passed away.

She puts on one heck of a show and she's not afraid to be herself.

That's refreshing!

Valentine's Day is Upon Us!

I've never been a huge Valentine's Day fan but over the years I've learned to embrace it more and more.

Maybe it's because I have a wonderful husband to spend it with now where in years past I was single at home hoping for flowers from anyone.

Of course, we haven't been lucky enough to have kids of our own yet but we have nieces and nephews!

So, I was texting with my sister-in-law last night and suggested she do photo cards for the kids to give at school this year for Valentine's Day.

I left this one out when posting about my trip out to the Los Angeles area.

If you aren't familiar with Pink's hot dogs in Hollywood it's been made famous in TV and films and is frequented by celebrities.

We had already eaten lunch otherwise I would have bought one.

The main reason I had to stop and take this picture is the sign wishing actress Betty White a Happy 90th Birthday!

(her birthday was January 17th which was the time frame we were out there)

What a career she continues to have at her age!

I saw a recent interview with her and you would think she was more like 70-years of age with her spunk and stamina.

So, today I'm wishing Betty a happy belated 90th.

Am I the only one that thinks she is fabulous?!

The Progressive Dinner

We had our first progressive dinner with friends in the neighborhood last night.

Believe it or not the husbands planned the whole thing and did the cooking.

I love events like this I just think it is great that the men organized it all!

Our first stop of the night was just a few houses down at Bryan and Shannan's where they went all out.

Their basement is an entertainment area so they had us all down there where they have beer on tap and did cosmos.

The food was mushrooms stuffed with veal.

My favorite: bacon wrapped scallops with a sprig of rosemary.

French bread with caramelized onions and anchovies.

The 2nd stop of the night was our house for the main course.

My last minute table scape.

It was raining all day and I originally thought hydrangeas but it's not Spring quite yet.

Brad made lasagna but put it in a temp baking dish in order for it to be thicker.

Delish!!

I made salad and we had french bread too.

So fun!

Our next stop was Keith and LeAne's for dessert.

WOW!

Keith made creme brulee from scratch.

And, LeAne did a table scape too!

And, they served dessert wine!

The whole gang again.

I'm already thinking of how we can do this once a month.

With next month's weekend falling on Mardi Gras weekend so I can attempt a king cake!

Oh..forgot.

All of our dogs participated in the dinner too.

And, Keith was our dog 'whisperer'.

Friday Night Out

Most of the time Brad and I enjoy cooking at home more than going out to eat but we do manage to get out every now and then and try new restaurants.

Friday night was one of those nights.

Our friends suggested a new place in the Cotswold neighborhood of Charlotte called LeRoy Fox.

For all you locals, it's located in the old Hotel Charlotte space.

But, boy oh boy have they renovated it!!

Hotel Charlotte was old school and a little dark for me.

LeRoy Fox is open and inviting!

They have only been open for a couple of weeks so they're still 'fine tuning' their menu.

What they have so far is great though!

There were eight of us and they made sure we didn't have much of a wait!

Always nice!

What was even better was that the manager AND the owner walked around and talked to patrons asking them how they liked everything so far.

I was telling both of them that I truly believe that one of the keys to a successful 'neighborhood' business is to get to know your customers.

At least, it keeps me coming back if I establish relationships with those working there.

Of course, the service is key.

As is the food.

I ordered salmon but Aaron ordered this shrimp and grits dish that she said was delish!

Brad kept it old school and ordered the chicken fingers.

Overall, great place and we WILL be back!

Hello from California

I'm in Southern California working this week.

I'm back in the land of the Kardashian's working in the city of Calabasas.

I'm lucky enough to be staying here at the lovely Four Seasons.

I'll post more about it later in the week but this is my second time staying at the FS in Westlake Village and I love everything about the hotel down to the hair dryer!

I'm glad to say that I am feeling better too and I am soo glad!

I hope to be able to do dinner on the water one or two nights while I'm here and I'll post pictures from that when I'm back.

A business partner and I went to dinner last night and she took me on a sort of 'celebrity home tour'.

I got to see the enclave where Heather Locklear lives and more.

Again, more on that later in the week.

For now, I wanted to introduce you all to a new blog to add to your reading list.

Remember my good friend Kathleen from Cleveland who we spend every Labor Day with on Lake Erie?

Well, she has started a blog!

She's a former television news reporter(that's how we know each other, she use to work in Charlotte), and now she's SAHM.

How I Spent My Weekend

I was sick the entire weekend but at least I was productive.

Hot Toddy Recipe for Colds and Sore Throat

Just when I thought I was totally over being sick?

It's back!!!!

ARGHHHH!

I am so over it.

I truly believe Brad and I have been passing this back and forth to each other.

This time it's in my chest and I'm coughing like no tomorrow.

I finally bit the bullet and went to Urgent Care today and got a Z-pack but of course, it's not instant.

I drank Thera-Flu when I got home but when I laid down to sleep the coughing started and wouldn't stop.

Brad got hung up at work so I called my Mom and she suggested the old fashioned 'hot toddy' for a remedy.

For the record:

I.HATE.WHISKEY.AND.BOURBON

But, was willing to try anything.

I googled a recipe and found Dr. Pat's Hot Toddy Cold Remedy.

We happened to have a mini bottle of Beam in the house leftover from football season.

I combined it with honey, lemon and water.

Popped in the microwave for a minute.

Garnished it with a lemon slice when out.

Wah-la.

Just read that this concoction is 206-calories.

Really?

For the record, it wasn't terrible but far from good because I despise whiskey.

But, it seems to be helping.

My throat feels better and my cough has settled down.

(by the way - I had just got in from walking the dog in 30-degree weather which is why I have a hat on inside)

We'll see where it goes from here!

I have to get better over this long holiday weekend because I travel back to California for work next week.

What are your 'get well' remedies?

I need all the advice I can get!

Random Thoughts(and, pictures) Thursday

Is it me or is the week just 'creeping' by?

At least we have a long weekend.

Here's my random thoughts for this Thursday along with pictures.

Don't get too excited.

* Believe it or not we have no big plans this weekend.

We're staying home and my goal is to get some shopping and cleaning done.

* Tonight is date night for Brad and I. Trying to think up something 'original' to do. Maybe visit a new restaurant or something. We run out of ideas.

* I'm loving the new season of 'Dance Moms'. Those little girls are amazing! I love to watch them dance even though their teacher is a biatch. I do think she's preparing them for life as a professional dancer, if that's what they choose, because from what I hear it's cut-throat.

Now for random pictures from this week.

Buddy and I watching the Tigers lose to Bama Monday night.

He was more into snoozing after the first quarter.

I made chicken divan 'lightened up', from Gina's Skinny Taste this week.

Pretty good for a low-cal version.

I've been visiting our Public Market a lot lately to buy fresh veggies.

Spotted these gorgeous sunflowers on display.

They were fake but I still thought they were amazing.

One of the things I picked up at the market this week were fresh beets.

I've heard a lot about roasting them lately so I gave it a try last night.

I scrubbed clean, cut off their top and bottom and wrapped in foil and popped in the oven.

Didn't keep them in there long enough but next time I'll know.

Dr. Oz says they're one of the best things for you!!

It's keeping with my New Year's goal of eating 'clean' foods.

We're also still eating our share of brussels sprouts, even though Brad told me yesterday that he's about tired of them.
I put them in a casserole last night so it wasn't as bad as him eating them roasted.

And, that's about all I have.

Our Next Big Adventure

As I've mentioned many times here on the blog Brad and I are really working on living in the moment and 'living' it up.

We've had several discussions about trips we want to take, friends we want to visit in 2012, and so forth.

One of the things we talked about a lot in 2011 is trying to plan a ski trip for our second wedding anniversary which falls in February.

A ski trip to Lake Tahoe was our very first trip to take together and was the subject of my very first post on this little blog.

But, this year we thought it would be fun to go with friends.

About a month ago, I texted our friends in San Francisco, Beth and DJ, to see if they might want to meet up in Tahoe for a quick trip.

I didn't hear back until last week when Bethie called and asked us to join them here next month..

The St. Regis at Deer Valley

Ummmm..YES, PLEASE!

This time next month we'll all be skiing down mountains in Deer Valley and Park City, while every now and then stopping into one of their lodges for a hot toddy.

Not to mention dipping into the heated pool or hot tub at this luxury resort.

Or, sitting by the fire..

I skied Utah 5-years ago but in the Alta area at Snowbird Resort.

This is Brad's first trip to Utah ever.

We're both excited about exploring Park City with our friends!!

Not to mention, celebrate Valentine's Day and our 2nd Wedding Anniversary all at the same time!

Jealous a bit??

We leave in exactly 28-days!!!

I'm excited just writing about it!!

I've read Les Miles post-game comments and his excuses on why he left Jordan Jefferson in as QB and never put Lee in but I'm still confused.

Oh, well.

It's just a game.

There is no question about it though, we got MAULED by Alabama and Nick Saban -- just as this stuffed bunny did.

Brad's Birthday and Weekend Pictures

After surviving sickness last week we enjoyed a low-key Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday was actually Brad's 34th birthday and while he originally told me that all he wanted was 'silence' as his gift we went out and got sushi.

His favorite is the 'Fire Cracker' roll at Ru Sans.

After dinner we came home and some of our neighbors came over and we all celebrated with a few adult beverages.

Again, low-key which was needed after our crazy holiday schedule and then being sick.

Today I woke up and met my friend Kelli for brunch and a trip to the Mint Museum.
They have a new exhibit at the museum and it was free to get in today.

This was my first trip to the new location in Uptown Charlotte.

We decided to brunch at the restaurant that's inside the museum, called Halcyon.

First visit here too.

It's a farm to table concept restaurant and I will be back!
The decor is very rustic.

The food was amazing!

The new exhibit inside the museum is a collection of Romare Bearden's work and it was something to see.

A fun Sunday!

Now, I'm just sitting here relaxing and catching up with my besties in Louisiana on the phone.

Everyone is STOKED about tomorrow's National Championship game where my LSU Tigers will take on Bama!!

I thought about watching it with the LSU Alumni group here in town but it's a work night and I think I've talked myself into staying home instead.

Why can't they schedule the game for a Saturday night??

Thoughts on Thursday

This is my first 'Thoughts on Thursday' in 2012!

* The drastic shifts in weather around here lately have Brad and I fighting this cold/sinus thing. I'm so over it. I have MAJOR sinus pain and congestion today. He's worse than I am but the man won't take a sick day if his life depended on it. So....much like my Dad.

* I didn't mention it the other day but one of my New Year's ~~resolutions~~ goals is take better care of me.

You may be wondering.. what the heck?

Well, I'm working on living in the moment and not thinking or worrying so much.

One of the ways I'm doing that is meditating but one of the other big ways I'm doing that is by quitting Facebook.

I actually quit about a month ago and it is by far the best thing I have ever done.

I don't need to know everything that is going on in different people's lives. I need to focus on me and Brad and our life instead of wasting so much time looking to see what other people are doing.

Granted, I've taken to Twitter(@DeNanner)since but I don't find it as distracting because it's mostly you bloggers that I follow and you're actually giving fun recipes and advice, not letting me know if you're child is sick.

I honestly can say I don't miss Facebook one bit. Not sure I'll ever log back on. Time will tell.

* Another new thing for me this year is that I added a Calorie Counter app on my phone. I have heard Brad talk about it for weeks and it's pretty cool.

Keeps you in check for sure!

I'm not really looking to lose a ton of weight but instead focus on being healthy and eating cleaner foods. Granted losing weight would be a bonus but I'm not going to make it some obsession.

* Last year I made a Shutterfly book recapping our year. I want to do that again but after making my Mom's book for Christmas not sure I really 'feel' like it.

* And, last but not least I found these pictures on my computer a few weeks ago.

They are old but thought I would share.

The first week in October Brad and I took the niece and nephew on their first zoo trip ever!

I wasn't feeling very good that day so I didn't take a lot of pictures like I generally do but here are the three that did turn out.

Artichoke Tarts -- WW Friendly!

I don't know about you all but I am so over holiday ham, cheese balls, cookies, and pies.

I have been eating veggies, fruits, and protein the past few days.

I've also been trolling blogs and websites for yummy healthy recipes.

So if you have any suggestions send them my way!

In the spirit of healthy eating I thought I would share one holiday recipe with you that is actually Weight Watcher friendly!

My good friend Karen brought them to our Open House and later sent the recipe.

They were a HUGE hit!

I personally have yet to make them but am thinking they might be on our menu for Friday night.
She says they're super easy!!

Artichoke Tarts
Servings: 8

Preparation Time: 15 min

Cooking Time: 15 min

Level of Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients:

Cooking spray

16 wonton wrapper(s)

1/4 cup(s) low-fat shredded cheddar cheese

4 oz fat-free cream cheese, softened

1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

1/2 Tbsp Dijon mustard

2 Tbsp sweet red pepper(s), chopped

7 oz canned artichoke hearts, without oil, drained and chopped

1/4 cup(s) parsley, fresh, sprigs

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a 16-hole miniature muffin pan with cooking spray.

Gently press 1 wonton wrapper into each muffin hole, allowing ends to extend above cups.

(I form each one over the end of a wide handled spoon before setting it into the muffin pan--helps prevent tearing)

Coat edges of wrappers with cooking spray and set aside.

Combine cheeses, cayenne pepper and mustard in a medium bowl; mix well.

Stir in red pepper and artichoke hearts; spoon about 1 teaspoon of cheese mixture into each muffin cup.

Bake until cheese mixture is set and edges of wrappers are lightly browned, about 15 minutes.

Garnish with parsley and serve.

Yields 2 tarts per serving.

New Year's Eve in Baltimore's Fells Point

I've never been big on New Year's Eve.

When I lived in Las Vegas I actually volunteered to work every year.

One - because I wanted Christmas off instead and working in TV news you have to choose one or the other.

Two - I'm not into fighting large crowds.

Three - I find it overrated.

But.... I have done it.

Mainly years I went to see LSU play somewhere for a bowl game.

This year it happened again.

Since our friends got married on the 30th of the December the plan was everyone to stay an extra night and ring in 2012 together!

So, we did just that in the Fells Point area of Baltimore at Bond Street Social Club.

Even though we were a little tired from the shenanigans the night before at the wedding we got 'dolled' up again and hit the town!

I wore a dress I already had in my closet and added the feather earrings.

Bond Street Social is right on the waterfront in the Harbor area.

A great area to watch the fireworks at midnight but what was even nicer is that they only sold 120 tickets to get into the restaurant so it wasn't too crowded.

Party paraphernalia.

The place was pretty cool.

They had several big rooms with fireplaces which was great to keep warm when they opened the whole restaurant up for the fireworks show.

We each paid $100 for a 4-hour open bar including passed appetizers.

Not a bad deal.

I actually ate the food and it was good!

The bride, Katie was out again.

Along with the groom, and most of the wedding party and friends.

Including the groom's two brothers.

The fireworks were amazing especially since we really didn't get to see a big show this year for the Fourth of July.

Brad and I both love fireworks.

The only bummer of the whole night?

It took us two hours and a LOT of walking to find a cab back to our hotel.

Go figure.

Despite that it was a great time and we had a fabulous weekend in Baltimore.

Would love to go back!

Josh and Katie's Baltimore Nuptials

We've been to nearly a wedding a month this year with our last being in the last days of 2011.

Our Charlotte friends, Josh and Katie got married on 12.30.11 in the Charm City!

Baltimore!!

They've been engaged for over a year giving the bride plenty of time to pay attention to every little detail.

I was impressed!

When we checked into our hotel we received a welcome box full of Maryland goodies.

Love the pretty ribbon and sticker!

We were shuttled from our hotel to the church, all in Downtown Baltimore.
The church looked gorgeous decked out with poinsettias.

A lot of people were taking pictures during the ceremony but Brad is totally against that.
So, here's the picture of the bride I got afterwards.

Her dress was Priscilla of Boston.

Gorgeous!

To match the beading on her dress she had bling added to her bouquet.
I didn't get any good pictures of the bridesmaid dresses but they were simple and elegant and most wore big rhinestone earrings.

Perfect for a New Year's Eve weekend wedding!

Then we were all shuttled over to their reception venue.

The historic Belvedere.
For all you Mad Men fans, they recently filmed a couple of episodes here.

This place was impressive!

It's an old hotel they've converted into condos with a ballroom venue on the 12th floor and a bar overlooking the city on one of the top floors.

When we stepped off the elevator there was a table set up with family wedding pictures.
I did this too, but only had our parents wedding pictures.

She had pictures of great grandparent's weddings!

That's impressive as well!

For me, it was like an act of Congress getting our parent's pictures.

Name cards for the sit-down dinner.

Their favor was a donation to two causes close to their heart.

Josh's brother suffers from a spinal cord injury due to an ATV accident several years ago and Katie works with children who suffer from autism.

Their cocktail hour, of course included Maryland crab dip.

And, these yummy chicken taco bites among other food.

Then, we were ushered into a separate room for the dinner.
One word for this room.

AMAZING!

Brad even took a video with his phone to capture just how gorgeous this room was.

Love all the little details.

The meal consisted of a first course of salad and then a second course of salmon and beef.
Yum..

Katie has two sisters and Josh has two brothers so they had two best men and maid of honors.
Cool or what?

This is one of Josh's brother's giving his toast.

They all did a great job!

We were one of three couples from Charlotte.

We finally got a chance to meet their friends Erin and her husband Craig for the first time.
We're already making plans to all do dinner very soon!

One of the best parts of the reception for me was when I met two guys from my hometown!
(Well, where I went to high school and all my family lives)
The groom is from Arkansas so two of his good friends are from Hot Springs.
Of course, giving it's not that big of a town, we know a lot of mutual people.
They know a lot of my family too!
They're a few years younger than me, so of course, I didn't know them.
Very fun though!

Their wedding reception was one big dance party!

I can't remember the last time I saw so many people dance at a wedding!

Kids, parents, everyone!

Brad said he thought he was at a rave at one point!!

HAHA!

The bride and groom both did such a great job!

What a lovely event and we're so glad that we were included in their special day.

The party didn't end here though.

A big group from the wedding spent New Year's Eve at a fun restaurant on the water in Downtown Baltimore.

Visiting Family and Friends in Virginia

After all of our Christmas festivities were over with we got the house cleaned up and all of the decorations taken down then we did what we do best.

Hit the road.

Knowing we had a wedding in Baltimore on the 30th of December we decided to make the most of our trip and left a couple of days early to visit family and friends.

Our first stop was in Richmond where we stayed Brad's cousin Wade and his new wife Sarah.

Of course, their house was decked out from Christmas.

Wade and Sarah both love to cook and were excited to cook up some steaks on their Big Green Egg.

They were delish and I'm so intrigued with that egg!!

They recently finished some renovations on their house and in their new room they had a second tree with handmade ornaments made by Sarah's mother Christa.

She's so very talented.

She makes a new one each year.

They each tell a story of that year.

So, this little tree is soley dedicated to these ornaments.

So special!

Their other tree was lovely as well and real.

I'm missing not having a real tree.

Maybe next year.

Always fun to see and visit with Wade, Sarah and their two dogs and cat.

They always go out of their way to make us feel at home.

Sarah even got up and made us pancakes and eggs!

From Richmond we made our way to the Northern Virginia area where we got to meet a friend's new baby and catch up with several of Brad's college and high school friends.

Including Andrew and Emily who live in Houston now but were in NOVA for the holiday.

So great seeing both friends and family!

From here we headed East to Baltimore for a friend's wedding.

Happy 2012!

We've been on the road for the past 5-days and I have so much to share.

Pictures and stories from our visit with family and friends in Richmond and the DC area, and our friend's amazing wedding and New Year's Eve in downtown Baltimore.

I've been noticing that a lot of bloggers are posting about their New Year's resolutions.

I'm not going to go on and on but, I will share two of my goals this year.

One is for Brad and I to join a church and the second is to simply live in the moment.

Oh...of course, eat better, exercise more and relax.

YAY for 2012!!!

As I mentioned, we've been on the road all week and got a chance to catch up with a lot of people.

Including my blog b/f/f, I Do Declare!

As you know we've met a couple of times before.

Once this Summer and then a weekend this Fall we went to Williamsburg.

BUT..we've been eager to have our husbands meet.

She and her husband live in Maryland and sincet we were in Baltimore for a wedding this week, we decided to meet up for a late lunch on NYE.

A friend suggested Mama's on the Half Shell in the Canton area of Baltimore.

It was super cute and reminded me of some of the restaurants in the historic district in Boston.

And, they make one mean, BIG fish and chips!

Can you believe this?

Of course, the lunch was as fun and easy as I had expected!

Some of my non-blogger friends like to make fun of the whole 'blog world'.

But, I'm here to tell you that you can meet some great people and friends.

Brad told me afterwards that I had 'done good' in meeting I Do Declare and her husband.

Such a great way to kick off New Year's Eve!

We hope to see them again soon!

Christmas Day - Tablescape, Food and Family

Christmas Day came early as we were hosting dinner at our house with everyone arriving at two o'clock.

I prepared a breakfast casserole a day in advance and popped it into the oven.

Eggs, cheese, bread cubes, sausage, ground mustard.

Bake for an hour at 350-degrees.

It's become our Christmas morning tradition.

I forgot to buy orange juice so my Mom and I had cranberry Bellini's instead of mimosas.

I had to rearrange things from our Open House to make way for Christmas dinner.

First on my list was to move my centerpiece to our entry table.

I threw this arrangement together at the last minute before my cookie exchange and I think it turned out pretty good giving it was a bunch of fake items from Michael's.

Then I put together our Christmas dinner table scape.
I really had no idea what I was going to do until Christmas Eve.

All of my creative juices were spent on our Open House menu and decor.

This just came to me at the last minute.

I think it turned our perfect giving I used items we already had at the house.

I love to tablescape any time of the year.
I've been this way since I was a little girl.

My job on holidays was to always set the table.

I can remember wanting to live like The Ewing's from the hit 80's show Dallas and trying to put together a table like theirs.
LOL!

When putting together dinner I cut up a pomegranate for us ladies to put in a glass of champagne.
The last I had around for the holiday season.

For dinner Brad made a prime rib.

It's his favorite thing too cook other than jambalaya and homemade pizzas.

I attempted the Louisiana traditional rice dressing but started it too early and kept adding water to it to keep it moist until I ruined it.

I was so mad.

I had to go upstairs to recoup from my anger.

But.. then realized we already had a ton of food and since we had been eating for 3-days it wasn't a big deal.

The rest of our meal consisted of broccoli salad, deviled eggs, herb and cheese scalloped potatoes, rolls, pecan pie and all the left over cookies and treats from the Open House.

Before all of our dinner hoopla we exchanged gifts.

My parents stayed with us so we did ours after breakfast.
Other than the Botox that my brother and his kids gave my Mom, I think her 2nd favorite gift was this Shutterfly book I made.

She cried.

I got Brad a Kindle Fire.

He's in love.

Buddy got a new bed so we can keep one of his others at the lake for good.

He also scored a few fuzzy blankets to be wrapped up in.

My big gift were these gorgeous cowboy boots.
I picked them out weeks ago and was with Brad when he bought them.

Sorta lame?

Oh, well.

I also received these cute ornaments from my MIL.
She said the shoe reminded her of my wedding shoes.

I agree!

So pretty and perfect!

Speaking of MIL, Brad picked up this sign for the dock at the lake.
We all got a good laugh!

Thanks to Classic Annie's suggestion, FIL and my Dad both received a Polar Bear Cooler.
Can't wait to see how they like them.
I had never even heard of the brand.

Paigee received a kitchen set from my parents.

Reed received a motorcycle toy from my parents and a remote control car from Uncle Brad and I.

He was entertained.

I wanted to buy Paige this trunk of dress up costumes last year but didn't.

This year, I couldn't resist.
All princess, all the time.

Of course, I didn't mention all the wonderful things we were given but that would take forever.
The best gift we received was that of family being together this year.

It was the first year for my family(minus my brother and his kids), and Brad's family to do Christmas together.

I feel so lucky to have in-laws that are drama-free.

I look forward to many more holidays together!

Until then, we're resting up!!!

Christmas Eve 2011

After our Holiday Open House on the 23rd of December we all chose to have a more intimate, family gathering for Christmas Eve.

Brad and I, along with my parents headed out to BIL and SIL's house early in the evening for church.

Nephew Reed looked extra preppy for Christmas Eve service.

He had to bribed though.

He didn't want to wear the vest until I told him he could open a couple of gifts when we got home from church.

(Which was already the plan, he just didn't know it)

In fact, the whole family looked smashing in their Christmas best!

The family, friendly service was lovely.

So, nice for all of us to be at church together.

My parents, my in-laws and BIL and SIL and niece and nephew.

After the service we went back to BIL and SIL's where I got a glimpse of the cookies the kids made for Santa.
Complete with frosting and sprinkles!

The kids couldn't wait to open their couple of gifts.

One gift a piece from me and Uncle Brad.

Christmas PJ's!

And, one gift a piece from my parents.

Books!

Reeders was thrilled with his Polar Express book!

Then, as always we took Christmas Eve pictures by the tree.

BIL and SIL's tree was so pretty.
I always love looking at ornaments people have on their trees.

Front and center is a 'Survivor' ornament.

Love it.

This was also a favorite.

Of course, there was a Spiderman ornament and gift wrap!

Nephew Reed is obsessed with Spidey!

We hung out and drank, ate and enjoyed family time.

Me and my MIL.

Then cousin Katie stopped by to say hello.

The kids were thrilled!

Then onto tracking Santa on the internet...

And, leaving snacks out for the reindeer.

And, Santa...

Topped off with a little quiet time with PaPa.

Our Holiday Open House 2011

Whew!

We've had quite a three days!

Christmas is officially over and I'm a little sad and glad all at the same time.

Believe it or not - I have all our decorations down except for the actual tree with lights!

I'm going to spend the next few days recapping our holiday weekend starting with our holiday open house on the 23rd.

We invited quite a few people including a lot of my family that is local along with friends and neighbors.

When it was all said and done we had nearly 40 people!

Over 30-adults and nearly 10-children.

We decided early on to serve a holiday ham with assorted rolls and biscuits as part of our menu.

Mustard and assorted jams for fixins'.

Southern, don't you think?

Drinks included a sparkling punch with champagne on the side if you wanted it.

Wines, beer, spirits for mixing along with my traditional Nottoway mulled cider punch.

I think everything turned out lovely if I must say so.

My parents and Brad's parents both drove in early for the party and helped with food.

My Mom put together this veggie tray with a yummy dip that I will have to post about later in the week.

Holiday cheese board with venison summer sausage made from a deer my BIL killed.

Gouda cheese logs.

My friend Karen brought these little snacks that were delish!

I'll post about these later in the week as well.

We also had goose breast my FIL brought and tons of yummy sweets and treats thanks to my cousin Katie.

Of course, SIL and BIL were there.

With the munchkins in tow.

Good friends Amanda and Elizabeth stopped by.

Along with a slew of others.

Including my cousins, the Morgado clan.

Will we do it next year?

I hope so!

It would be fun to make it annual event this year being our first.

Even Buddy had a good time!

Holiday Randomness

Santa is coming to town!

Just a couple of more days!

We're hosting a Holiday Open House at our home tomorrow night for family and a few friends.

I'm excited about the menu, the drinks and seeing everyone.

I'll try and post about it this next week.

We had a few friends over recently and one the gals brought everything for Christmas Cranberry Martinis.

White cranberry juice, ice, cranberry vodka and triple sec.

Pretty tasty!

Remember that weekend that I made all that cookie dough and froze it?

Well, I baked two of the batches the other night.

I was a little worried but they turned out perfect.

I have my sugar cookie dough still in there but plan for my Mom and I to make those on Christmas Eve together.

Should be something fun and festive to do together.

The munchkins stopped by the other night.

They are too cute for words.

They were amazed at all of our wrapped gifts and were ready to start opening the ones for them!

You have a few more days for that kiddos!

I received this gorgeous card in the mail yesterday.

It gave me chills.

My friend who got pregnant with twins through IVF, sent it out.

The pictures, the scripture..I love it all.

So happy for them.

I try and live by that scripture these days.

That's pretty much all I have for today.

About to finish my Christmas grocery shopping and then home to clean for family coming to town.

Happy Christmas Week!

We're still working, but getting ready for this weekend's festivities as well.

Not too much longer!

One of my favorite parts of the holidays is sitting in our living room watching TV and looking at our tree.

Nothing like it.

One of my other favorites?

Receiving Christmas cards in the mailbox.

It's fun to see familiar faces!

Over the years, I've been coming up with different ways to display them all.

Back in the day I use to display them on my coffee table under a piece of glass.

Since getting married I/we get a ton of cards so that fills up pretty quick so I don't do that anymore.

I guess you can say I've moved on.

My most recent display is this one under our kitchen bar.

I just added the top level.

I figure we'll get a few more to fill it all in before the week is over.

My other way to display is by using a piece of ribbon and simple scotch tape.

I've done this the last few years.

Simple and fills a blank space.

I just love having them on showcase and our guests love to look at them!

Pictures, the designs, the paper.

I love it all!

So fun to see what people come up with!

I've seen where people save their cards year after year and display categorizing by year.

Do any of you do this?

It would seem fun but not sure I would have enough room.

Easy Chicken and Dumplings

Sundays at our home are all about comfort food.

Yesterday I did the rest of my Christmas shopping early in the day, then we went and saw a movie.

I had no real plans for dinner so when Brad asked what we should cook I thought of a meal that my boss suggested recently.

Chicken and dumplings, the easy way.

Don't get me wrong -- I grew up eating dumplings probably once a week.

My family can whip up a pot like it's a peanut butter and jelly but I have always been intimidated because of having to roast a chicken and make the dough.

That is -- until my boss suggested this recipe.

Buy these dumplings in the frozen section of your grocery store.

From there you:

-Put 3-cups of chicken stock, 2 cans of cream of chicken, and 2-or-3 cups of water in a pot and bring to a boil.

-Stir until all the cream of chicken is dissolved.

-Take your frozen dumplings and divide and throw into pot. DON'T STIR!

-Let the dumplings cook

-From there put your chicken in. We were last minute doing this so we bought a rotisserie chicken from the store but you could use left over chicken from another meal if you wanted or roast one(even though, this dish is cooked different if you roast your own.)

-Let simmer for a few minutes and serve.

Huge hit!

Having had a few dumplings in my life I can be pretty snobby about them, but for a quick meal I was pretty impressed with how these turned out!

The whole meal took less than 20-minutes!

Brad loved it too!

Buddy only wishes he could have had a bite.

He camped out in the kitchen by the pot in hopes.

He does this every once in a while and it makes me laugh.

Kale Stays In

I've been hearing people rave about kale for months now but had yet to run across any.
Yesterday that all changed when I made my first visit to Charlotte's new 7th Street Public Market.
The market is full of local vendors who grow their own food, make their own wines, raise their own meat.
It's a year-round Farmer's Market per-say.
So, it was there that I saw fresh kale and knew I had to buy some.
Cheap too.
An entire bag for $1.36.

I mentioned on Twitter(follow me here if you wish) that I had bought kale for dinner and A Liz stepped up with a suggestion on how to prepare it to compliment our grilled salmon I had planned for dinner.
Saute' it with a little EVOO, lemon juice and broth.

Brad wasn't so sure about kale.

He had never heard of it but he's pretty open to new things.

His response after eating it?

'Kale stays In!'

Even Buddy likes it!

I'm pretty sure kale is our new obsession.

Aside from sauteing it I can't wait to make kale salads and prepare it other ways as well.

Christmas Decorations 2011!

Holiday Cookie and Ornament Exchange

Yesterday I had my annual holiday cookie and ornament exchange!

With help from my super awesome husband, I think it was a SUCCESS!

I did things a little different this year.

I moved all the food out of the kitchen and into the dining room.

Generally, I have everyone put their cookies in here but I decided to change it up a bit.

You like?

A big thanks to my blogger b/f/f, I Do Declare, for creating my signs!

The only screw up of the party was that I didn't buy enough Rose' for this cocktail that my other blogger friend, A Liz, suggested.

Rosemary Rose'.

One word.

YUMMY!

We just didn't have enough of it!

I also provided my Nottoway Punch.

Everyone loved that too.

My party favors were inspiration of blogger, Miss Janice.

Peppermints with peppermint hand sanitizer from Bath and Body works.

Which, I Do Declare, also helped with by sending me loads of suggestions.

She's so talented.

Anything with brie is good!

Ghosts of Christmas Past

One of my favorite bloggers, Niki, always does a Friday Flashback and today I'm copying her.

Today is it is...

The Ghosts of Christmas Past.

Don't you remember the excitement of Christmas morning when you were a kid?

The joy of opening the one gift that you wanted more than anything?

Christmas was a HUGE deal when I was growing up.

My Mom went out of her way to set traditions.

Christmas Eve we would drive around and look at Christmas lights, read the Christmas story out of the Bible, leave cookies and ~~Coca-Cola~~ milk for Santa and then in bed before midnight.

Christmas morning would come and my brother and I would be up at the crack of dawn.

Seriously, I think 3am.

My parents would make us wait.

But, when the opening started it was a big deal.

The year this picture was taken I received an initial ring that I wanted so badly.

Does anyone else remember the initial jewelry phase?

Gotta love that robe too.. Eh?

Since getting married Brad and I love to reminisce about our childhood days and swap stories of Christmas' past.

He too, was overjoyed by presents and everything that is Christmas.

Can't you tell by this picture?

It seems he was always a big fan of the lake and water sports.

Even though we haven't been lucky enough to have human children of our own yet we are incorporating some of our family Christmas traditions and starting some of our own.
I'll share those with you in another post on another day.

Proud Aunt!! - Weight Loss Story

A little bit of a different post today.

We're still enjoying the holidays but I thought I would pause for a moment and say what a proud Aunt I am.

I hesitated posting this but I am just over the moon and want to brag so here it is.

First off...

Let me give you a little background.

Our family is plagued with fat genes.

Fat genes mixed with good ole' Southern and Cajun cooking isn't the best combo.

So, we all have to watch it and even then it's hard to lose weight and maintain.

My brother's two girls are part of that crew.

From an early age they've battled their weight.

4-years ago my two nieces came to visit me here in North Carolina.

I was so excited and in regular 'Dee fashion', I wanted to show them my favorite part of the state I call home. So we headed West to the Blue Ridge mountains to see and walk a nature trail or two.

That year both of my nieces were battling their weight in the worst way possible.

We were very concerned for both but more so for my niece Holly who was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 15.

All due to weight.

Here's a glimpse of the three of us four years ago.

Since that trip 4-years ago both girls have made A LOT of lifestyle changes.

My niece Holly made the decision to become vegan.

No, not just to lose weight but because of her passion for animals.

Her attitude and life motto is that she doesn't eat puppies or kitties.

She doesn't even use products tested on them either.

She's PASSIONATE!

My other niece, Hannah, made the decision to eat better and exercise.

With that here's what they look like today.

Amazing or what?

Both are continuing their journey to lose more weight and be healthy.

Not always an easy thing to do living in South Louisiana where everything is deep fried and covered in cheese!

So, that's my post for today.

Stephens Christmas Card!!

I think everyone on my address list has received our card this year!

I was prepared and had a plan so we were able to get them in the mail semi-early.

I created half of them with Tiny Prints .

Here's what I came up with.

I'm so glad we got a single family picture this year.

While I enjoyed the picture montage the past couple of years, I was ready for something new.

I really like the monogrammed wreath on this one and the card stock was heavy.

This one is very elegant and very much my style!

The other half of my cards were created using Shutterfly .
I think these turned out just as cute but much more festive!
The colors are bright and cheery.
The card stock is heavy and on the back is a picture of Buddy kissing Santa.

Is it obvious that I heart the holidays?

Fourth Ward Holiday Home Tour

As if I didn't get enough holiday excitement with our ride on The Polar Express, I planned an outing for me and a couple of girlfriends to do the Fourth Ward Holiday Home Tour on Sunday.

Believe it or not -- this was my first holiday home tour in Charlotte!

*Disclaimer: I've been using my IPhone as my primary camera and I'm still trying to figure it out.

Hence -- all the crooked pictures.

I think I'm going back to my Nikon as my primary even though Brad claims it's not as good.*

Back to the tour.

The tour was in the Fourth Ward neighborhood which is one of Charlotte's cutest.

Historic homes nestled in Uptown.

After picking up our tickets we walked past the Berryhill house where Christmas carolers were singing.

Then past Alexander Michael's Restaurant.

One of my favorite places in Charlotte.

A lot of locals don't even realize this neighborhood exists until being told.

They offered carriage rides to and from the different stops.

Each house was very different but my favorite was this one with an amazing outdoor living space.

I would love to sit in front of that fireplace at night with a glass of wine!

There was a full table with chairs in the area too.

I had other pictures but blogger isn't my friend this week.

After the tour we enjoyed a glass of wine at Alexander Michael's then headed to Founder's Hall where the Bearstein Symphony Orchestra was entertaining area children.

These animatronic bears are too cute for words!

We then made our way to the Ritz-Carlton where we viewed the gingerbread house and enjoyed another glass of wine and some chocolate from Bar Cocoa.

Such a fun day with the girls!

It was so great to see Uptown Charlotte bustling as well.

Families, couples, all sorts of people out and about enjoying holiday festivities.

Now, that I've recapped my weekend I can give a shout out to my LSU Tigers!!

Polar Express Trip 2011

I have been trying to get this post up all morning with no luck.

It's not what I had hoped it would be but it will have to do giving issues with Blogger not wanting to post pictures properly.

As I mentioned Friday, SIL and I took niece and nephew to ride the Polar Express in Bryson City, NC this weekend.

Bryson City is in the Western NC mountains near the Smoky Mountain National Park.

In anticipation of our mini-vacay I put together little goody/treat bags for the kids.

Gummies, Polar Express coloring worksheets, crayons, bells and holiday headbands.

It didn't totally kick in what we were doing or where we were going until we got to the hotel.

When we walked in they had The Polar Express movie playing in the lobby.

They freaked!

On another note - this was their first hotel stay ever!

This was when we gave them their treat bags.

Reed is always excited about candy and 'gifts'.

I brought Robyn and I a little 'treat' as well.

A bottle of Biltmore Christmas wine.

We had a little time to kill the next day before our big train ride so we drove up into the national park.

First time for Robyn and the kiddos.

I had to get their picture in front of the sign.

It was chilly up at Newfound Gap where NC meets TN.

There was even snow on the ground.

Future hiker?

Who knows!

After our drive through the park we headed back into Bryson City to get ready for our ride on The Polar Express!

They give all the kiddos golden tickets just like in the movie.

We actually let them carry their own tickets until time to get on the train with the understanding that if they lost them they didn't get on.

I was impressed.

They held them tight and didn't lose them!

You can see the excitement on Reed's face!

Then we got on the train.

This is where my pictures get out of order and I'm sick of trying to move them around on this post.

This was when we boarded the train.

It was really cute -- all the people working were in costume and character.

Just like the movie.

The views were amazing.

Water, mountains, even wildlife and farms along the way.

I had pictures of the entire ride but a lot of them wouldn't load.

During the ride, they read the story of The Polar Express, served hot cocoa and cookies and last but not least the boys and girls were greeted by Santa and given a bell.

Such a great time and a great way to kick off the holiday season!

If you live in the Carolinas, Southern Virginia,Georgia or TN -- you should consider doing this with your children.

All the kids and even adults really enjoyed it -- Robyn and I even saw adults who wore their pajamas on the train too!

No joke - one family all had matching pj's and they were monogrammed!

I can't ever see myself doing that much less Brad!

I showed it to my friend last night who said it should be their Christmas card!

I think so too despite Reed having a crazy hair day!

Will we do it next year?

I would be up for it!

Why, you ask?

Because, SIL and I are leaving for Bryson City, NC to take the niece and nephew to ride the Polar Express!!

I have been talking about this trip for a year now!

I think I'm more excited than the kids will be!!

Reeders is OBSESSED with the movie and anything he does Paige follows along!

The trip is on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad and is a hour long ride where the story is read and kids are served hot cocoa and greeted by Santa!

Destination?

The North Pole!

We're going to tell them when we get on the road tonight.

Can you say FREAK OUT?!

It will take us 3-hours to get there.

I'm getting little goodie bags ready for them that will include these.

My Spirits are Being Lifted

I'm feeling in better spirits today and hope that I stay on the UP and UP!

It has helped that I have gotten my butt back into the gym after a 2 or 3-week hiatus.

So, not like me.

I was just feeling TERRIBLE.

Other things lifting my spirits?

Receiving this book in the mail from my cousin.

I can't wait to read.

Sick or what?

Brad is DISGUSTED.

He loathes the K's.

Thinks they are a bunch of hookers and Kris is their pimp.

It's kinda true.

Doesn't stop me from reading though!

Other things that have helped.

It's finally turned off cool here in the Carolinas so I tuck Buddy into bed at night so he can stay warm.

I'm a nerd and have been doing this for years.

He seems to LOVE it!

And, last but not least.

This made me happy when I got it out of our mailbox.

Buddy received a holiday card from his friend Cali Bear in San Francisco.

Trying To Get My Holiday Spirit On!

I'm not going to lie.

I'm in a funk and I'm trying to get out of it.

We've been through a lot in the past few weeks and while we had a great time down in Louisiana coming home and back to reality kinda sucked.

I'm up part of the day and down the other half.

I'm TIRED of it.

I AM trying my best to use the art of positive thinking to help me enjoy the holidays to the fullest though!

But, it's not easy!

When we first got home from Thanksgiving I dreaded decorating our house.

You have no idea.

That.is.not.like.me

I love the holidays.

Instead...

I wanted to curl up in the bed, sleep, watch TV and be alone.

But, I used mind over matter and got my ass up and into the closets to pull out our decorations.

I thought it would make me feel better.

So, I decorated.

Here's our tree.

Not sure why it always looks crooked.

I decorated our mantle, dining and other areas too but that's for another post.

Everything got done!

Our house is Christmasfied!

Then, we went and met my in-laws and got The Buddy back.

When we got there my MIL had a big bucket of holiday cheer and items for us including this cutie.

I just adore it.

I opted out of putting it on the tree and instead have it on display with an ornament hanger for everyone to see.

But, while everything is decorated and I'm booking our weekends up with holiday fun I'm still not truly in the holiday spirit.

Maybe cool weather would help?

I'm not sure.

I just wish somehow that Santa would send some holiday cheer early!

Until then, I'll continue to look to my art of positive thinking as hard as it is!!

Tailgating for LSU vs. Arkansas

Our Thanksgiving trip down to South Louisiana was topped off with a visit to the LSU campus on Friday just in time to tailgate for the Arkansas game!

No, we didn't have tickets or want to pay $400 a piece for some, so we enjoyed all the fanfare that IS tailgating in and around Tiger Stadium then watched at a bar with friends.

This was Brad's first visit to Baton Rouge and the LSU Campus.

After a walk through campus and by the lakes we arrived around the famous clock tower.

Where we had our picture taken in front of the Christmas tree.

My college friend Gina and her husband were awesome and hosted of us for the day and night.

The tailgate?
Perfect!

And, I got to see a lot of people I had not seen since college.

They had everything you could ask for.
Open bar.

Gumbo.

Jambalaya, boudin, mini pies.
Everything and anything.

After 4-years it was nice to be back in Baton Rouge for Thanksgiving and on the LSU campus.

Great to hear the sounds from the Golden Band from Tigerland too!

I love college football.

Oh, almost forgot.

Our niece Hannah stopped by the tailgate to say hi.

I can't believe how grown-up she is.

Seventeen now.

As I mentioned, we didn't have tickets to the game but we ventured over to one of the old school establishments I use to frequent as a student.
The Chimes.

It sits right outside the gates of campus.

And, of course!

The best part of the whole day was that the Tigers won!

UNDEFEATED!!

While Brad was dressed up as an LSU fan while in Baton Rouge, as most of you know he's a Virginia Tech Hokie and they WON this weekend too!

#1 and #5 BABY!
